The Rev. Spencer D. Cantrell comes to St. George’s having previously served as Associate Rector at All Saints’ Church in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Prior to that he completed a clinical residency in pastoral care at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and served as Priest Associate at St. Mary’s Church in Harlem.
Born and raised in rural west Tennessee, Fr. Cantrell came to New York as an Episcopal Service Corps member and worked as a legal advocate for low-income New Yorkers in the NYC Civil Courts with the Community Development Project at the Urban Justice Center. During his time at St. Mary’s, he worked closely with the RDJ Refugee Shelter which specialized in housing LGBTQ+ asylum-seekers.
Fr. Cantrell holds a B.A. in Philosophy/Religion from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and an M.Div. from General Theological Seminary where he received the Bishop of Newark Preaching Prize and the Martyrs of Memphis Award for Outstanding Service. He is a Doctor of Ministry candidate at the School of Theology at the University of the South ("Sewanee") and is an instructor in philosophy at the George Mercer, Jr. Memorial School of Theology. He is an active member of the Sodality of Mary, Mother of Priests (SMMS).
